Species at Risk in Haliburton County
When the Land Trust began in 2005, we clearly defined our mission to protect natural heritage, but little was known about what species were sensitive and under threat in Haliburton County. Research to determine more about what Species at Risk (SAR) were found in the County and where their habitat lay began in 2007 with a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Species at Risk Fund.
The Land Trust has continued to research SAR each year since then. Many members of our community have reported observations of SAR, and combined with research projects, as of 2021, the Land Trust has approximately 4,000 documented observations of SAR in the County. These
observations are reported to a provincial database thereby contributing to conservation planning and education in Ontario as well as Haliburton County.
